How to make curls with rags: like the Ingalls

For months (since this post), we’ve been planning to see Little House on the Prairie the musical.

Prepping for the big night!

Finally on Saturday night the big day was here. To prepare for it, Naomi took a quick bath and a little nap (which she couldn’t get out of on account of the late night ahead). But before she took a nap we tie her hair up with rags from an old t-shirt.

It was so simple & the curls have lasted until today–reveal: we’re not daily bathers.

How to make the curls:

With wet/damp hair, take 2×2″-ish sections of hair. Wind the hair around a 3×1″-ish piece of cotton rag, winding toward the scalp. Tie at the top keeping the hair wrapped around. Repeat until all sections of hair are wound.

Tie them all up toward the scalp.
This is how it should look after you have tied them all up!

Let the curls totally dry. Sleeping helps kill time. I would do them the night before trips to town or other fancy events:

Sleep soundly and when you woke up you’ll get a gorgeous hair.

Untie, unwind and enjoy!

Ta-Da! Look at them tightly wound up curls!

It is even more adorable under a bonnet!

… and while cutting your pancake at the Flying Biscuit!

Look extra adorable while cutting your favorite pancake.

Look fabulous with the whole group. Aunts, grandmas and great grandmas…

It was surely a great time, made more special with the curls. I wouldn’t expect to see any mention of this new musical at the Tony’s or anything, but it is surely fun.

AANNDDD WAY more fun than the stomach bug that greeted us as soon as we got home…ugh.

That is so cool!!! What a great idea. She looks incredibly adorable, even with the ties in her hair 🙂

So cute! I remember my mom doing that when I was a kid. 🙂 I hope you had fun. I would have loved to go, but too close to the trip.

What a cool way to tie it all together! That's awesome! Glad you enjoyed!

Oh, I would have died and gone to heaven. I grew up in the land/time of the boing-boing curls, and I had to sleep in pink foam rollers every night– not as much fun… hope you all recover soon. We had it here last month– it stinks.

Sooooo jealous. You know how much I wanted to see that play…but it just wasn't in the budget this month. My mom used to do a similar thing with my hair except she cut paper bags in strips and did it that way:) Boo for the stomach bug. You guys have been plagued this year:(

So fun! My mom did rag curls with me, but used kleenex. I got to see Little House when it first opened in my neck of the woods. You are right, it was fun.

Thank you – I have another wish on our wish list. Perhaps after the hot sun tomorrow we will sit after a cool bath and tie up little ringlets.

    Your blog is very inspirational.

    Namaste.
